In recent years, people have become more interested in the origins of their products. Just as fair trade food products are increasingly popular, and people have come to appreciate local produce and carefully sourced ingredients, we are taking an interest in the origins of our other consumer goods. Mass-production has brought about an era of cheap, disposable, but poorly made fast fashion – and now we are seeking something better. Personal fit, freer choice – beautiful things made to last.

The popularity of the Great British Sewing Bee shows a country itching to create. People are pulling out their sewing machines and knitting needles, and making. We find the community spirit recovering lost skills, and sharing them with others. When we learn to sew our own clothing, and repair and refashion the things we have, we gain a range of personal expression beyond choosing off the rail. We can make ethical choices about where our clothing comes from. And if we can imagine it, we can create it.
