Our July meeting was on the hottest day of the year and our Chairman introduced the new sound system.
We were updated on the WI Centenary Annual Meeting held at the Royal Albert Hall and it was interesting to hear about seeing the Queen, other members of the Royal Family and important guests. The centenary baton was handed over to the Queen. The event was linked live to Anglesey where the first WI was formed.
Our speaker was Janine Pinel from the Suffolk West Citizens Advice Bureau. This is not Government funded and
is a charity. It first opened its doors on 4 September 1939. During the second world war meetings were held in converted horse boxes. Issues at that time were lost ration books, bombing raid damage, problems with money and housing. These days it mostly centres on Pay Day Lenders, debt problems, marriage breakup and welfare benefits. The bureau relies on an army of specially trained volunteers and other staff who provide free independent advice on a range of subjects. It is also good experience for people seeking employment. The bureau is proactive in preventative work by talking to groups in the community and using special ways to educate people who need help. Their advice is impartial and confidential.
There are various ways we can support the work of the Bureau and further information can be obtained on line.
