Why is it that so many ideas seem so very plausible when a glass of wine or pint of ale has been consumed and why oh why at that point too, does your mind suddenly think your body is 20 years younger than it actually is?
This thought has gone through my mind on more than one occasion over the last few months as we have trained in the wind, rain, sleet and snow – looking in at people all cosy in their houses as we pound the streets of Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding villages, adding on mile after mile.
So we made the commitment and the scene was set – London Marathon 2016 – all 26.2 miles of it! When you say it quickly, it sounds ok – your body doesn’t ache, your blisters haven’t formed and you don’t realise the extent of the training required.
By January though it is evident that this is serious and time to put your game face on!
Running around the streets of Bury St Edmunds and the locality really makes you appreciate how beautiful it is where we live and also how many people there are out there running – passing the odd smile or a jaunty wave.
Friends and family also start to become accustomed to the fact that you are not drinking anymore and it is not a New Years resolution – just the fact that your legs feel like ten tonne weights if you have indulged in the obligatory Friday night post work drink. They also accept your new illuminous wardrobe and the fact that a bad run means you will be grumbling and stretching a lot later that evening – whereas a good run sees you bouncing off the walls with energy for the rest of the night.
Either way – we are almost there now – just a few weeks to go and fundraising is in full swing with our Quiz Night – Easter Egg competition and cake bakes.
It is not easy going from couch to 5k let alone couch to marathon – but we are nearing the finish and we can not imagine what it will be like to cross the line and hold that medal.
Finding camaraderie in a fellow runners is very motivating though – Eric and I are running for different charities for our own personal reasons. Eric for the Salvation Army and myself for MS Trust for which we are both proud and honoured.
Every raffle prize, every £ of sponsorship – we welcome and will be proud to handover to the charities at the end of this event.
