Dear reader,
Kidney patients at West Suffolk Hospital are now able to receive specialist care closer to home following the appointment of a consultant who has built up the service from scratch.
Dr Vivian Yiu started working at the hospital three months ago, and is the first consultant nephrologist employed by West Suffolk.
Since joining the trust, she has set up two new clinics for kidney patients, which means they no longer have to travel to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for chronic kidney disease management and follow up care for acute kidney injury (AKI).
She has also introduced an alert system to ensure she sees patients with AKI as quickly as possible so that they can start their treatment earlier, and will run education sessions for clinical colleagues to help them identify the condition.
“We have taken some fantastic steps forward in the care which we offer to kidney patients,” said Dr Yiu, who has been appointed jointly with Addenbrooke’s and splits her time between the two trusts.
“We are now able to offer a lot more care at West Suffolk, which is much more convenient for patients as it means they no longer need to travel to Cambridge for treatment.
“We also run a joint diabetes and renal clinic every month, which offers patients a fully joined-up service and gives them the chance to see all of their specialists during one visit to the hospital.
“All of the feedback we have received so far has been really good and its satisfying to know the new service is already making such a difference to people.”
