This month to help you all start those new year fitness resolutions I’m going to share with you 5 Nutrition Facts that should be common sense (But Aren’t)

1. You Don’t Need to Eat Every 2-3 hours – I get asked a lot of times by members and clients about this, you really don’t need to be constantly eating in the order to lose weight.
Studies have shown that smaller, more frequent meals have no effect on fat burning or body weight. Eating every 2-3 hours is inconvenient and unnecessary for the majority of people. Everyone is individual and you need to work out when is best for you to eat, what types of foods you should be eating and how to fit this around your life. I never give the same nutrition plan because how can a male 40 years old, 2 children, working shifts looking to lose body fat have the same nutrition plan as a 19 year old college female looking to build muscle.

2. Never trust mainstream media for Nutrition Information – Mainstream media is part of the reason for all the nutrition confusion out there. Stories/studies are often taken out of context looking to make headlines. Find quality sources for your information. Not someone or a company who is working on commission to sell a product, shake, juice etc.

3. Low Fat Does Not Equal Healthy – The “low-fat” diet promoted by the mainstream nutrition guidelines is a failure. Numerous studies show that it doesn’t work, neither for weight loss or disease prevention. This led to a vast amount of processed “low-fat” foods to be brought into the market, because the foods taste bad without the fat, the food manufactures added a whole bunch of sugar to them instead. Foods that are naturally low-fat like fruits and vegetables are great but processed food with “low-fat” on the label are usually loaded with unhealthy ingredients.

4. Fruit Juices – A lot of people believe that fruit juices are healthy. It seems to make sense because they come from fruit. However, fruit juices contain just as much sugar as sugary soft drinks like coca cola. There is no fibre in them and no chewing resistance, making it very easy to consume huge quantities of sugar. If you’re trying to avoid sugar for health reasons, then you should avoid fruit juices.

5. Health is about way more than how much you weigh – People focus too much on just the weight gain/loss. The truth is that health goes way beyond that. Many obese people are metabolically healthy, while many normal weight people have the same metabolic problems associated with obesity. I ask my clients to focus on energy levels, mood, productivity, sex drive, muscle mass, body fat percentage, performance in the gym, performance of their sport, ability to carry out day to day activities. Judge your health on many factors not just what you see when you stand on a scale.

If you have any questions you would like to ask please do not hesitate in asking.
