Brought to you by Councillors Sarah Stamp and Patrick Chung
Can you believe it is February already? Love is in the air this month and we hope to see many of you at the Valentines Ball at Southgate Community Centre on Valentine’s Day. A reminder – as your local councillors we are here to help, so if you have any local issues you’d like to discuss then please do get in touch.
LITTERPICK
We will again be holding a community litterpick on 25th February 2015 starting at 10am at the Southgate Community Centre. We hope to be joined by children from Hardwick Primary and Middle and South Lee Schools as well as local residents, Police and Havebury Housing in a tort to make the area look tidier. This will be the 8th litterpick we have organised – everyone is welcome and all equipment is provided free of charge by St Edmundsbury Borough Council. Please try and join us!
LOCAL BUDGET
Don’t forget if you are a community group or involved in a local project and need funding that you can apply to our locality budgets for small amounts.
NEW PLAYGROUND
We reported in the last issue that St Edmunds-bury Borough Council have named the “Nowton Pit” playground as a priority for them to revamp this year. We have now had several meetings to push this project forward and by the time you read this the contract will be out to tender. We are both keen that local residents should be involved in deciding what equipment we have and what the park looks like so we have asked for a public meeting of the Nowton Neighbourhood Residents Association (NNRA) on Tuesday 3rd March at 6.30pm in the Southgate Community Centrom the Council will bring plans with them and this is a great chance for you to have your say – all local residents are welcome so we hope to see you there. We are hoping the new park will be in place before the summer holidays.
Parking
We are pleased to report that Suffolk County Council Highways Team have now sent out letters to consult on several parking restrictions around the area which should address some of the concerns raised around hospital parking. These measures include addressing the issues on Home Farm Lane outside The Macebearer where parking has recently escalated leading to serious safety concerns and problems with bus access. If all goes according to plan and there aren’t serious objections, we are hopeful that these restrictions will be implemented by late spring but Sarah is chasing as your County Councillor to make sure this happens.
HARDWICK LANE RESURFACING
We arlong wait Hardwick Lane resurfaced. The work will take place between 9th and 14th February and there will be a short diversion in place between 7pm and 5am each night as the road will be closed at those times.
And finally…. have your say in May!
Thursday May 7th this year will see the General election being held on the same day as the Borough and Town Council elections ft time. This means that in Southgate, you will be asked to vote for your MP, two Borough Councillors and two Town Councillors all on one day. That’s a lot of ballot papers! Don’t forget that if you are likely to be away for the election or may o get to the polling station, you can apply now for a postal vote which can be completed and sent in before the election. You can find out how at www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/council/voting_and_elections or by calling 01284 763233. Whoever you vote for, please do make the time to vote – your voice matters.
