This week in Water Lily Class (Year 4) we learnt about the solar system. This included learning the names of the planets and their order from the sun.
We then went on to discuss and explore the distance between the planets and the sun. As part of our learning we used model size planets, and model distances to recreate the entire solar system. We then ventured outside to recreate our version of the solar system. Using a trundle wheel we measured the distance in metres from the Sun to Mercury and then to the other planets. We found that Saturn, Uranus and Neptune were so far away that even with our model distances we did not have enough room to include them on our school field!
“I didn’t realise how far away some of the planets were from the sun – It was amazing to see them in order with our model distances!”exclaimed Ciara.
“It was amazing to see how small Earth was compared to some of the other larger planets!” added Jake.
This work formed part of our whole school project for the term entitled “Fly Me To The Moon.” Our displays across the school feature models of the planets; replicas of buildings & bridges; and fast facts about astronauts; engineers; architects and scientists.
